Crane Repair for Siskin Steel

Our Team Fixed the Issue in One Weekend

The Customer

Siskin Steel located in Chattanooga, TN

The Challenge

The customer has wheel problems on an overhead crane that impeded their ability to operate it, slowing down project completion times and halting their ability to work. The customer noticed the crane was locking up on the runway, causing the crane not to move.

The Solution

The Excel Industries team travelled to the Siskin Steel facility to fully inspect the crane damage. The team inspected the crane’s wheel damage and utilized a laser aimed at the crane to better understand the damage and what was causing the issue.

The Excel Industries team’s inspection found that the end trucks on both ends had been bent inward, causing the wheel wear. Our team initially tried to machine special bearing caps to compensate for the bend in the trucks, but the trucks had already been significantly weakened and the final solution was to completely replace the end trucks.

The team was able to replace the end trucks in the air without having to pull the crane down. Excel Industries has a total station laser that we can do all our measurements in the air, allowing our team to ensure the span and square of the crane is exactly where it needs to be.

The Result

Siskin Steel’s crane now runs smoothly up and down the runway with no damage to the wheels. They are able to operate at full capacity and bring their production process back up to standards.

Our team completed their work in one weekend, saving the customer valuable production time. If our team had not been able to complete this project in the aggressive timeline we did, the customer would have lost two weeks worth of work due to the crane being down and not being able to complete repairs.
